Letter from the Executive Director:

The Fairfield County Alcohol, Drug Addiction, and Mental Health (ADAMH) Board appreciates the opportunity to serve the citizens of Fairfield County.  Personally, I am so grateful for the strong continued commitment of the ADAMH Board Members, ADAMH Board Staff, Network of Care Providers’ Board and Staff, and the many other persons and organizations with whom we partner to improve the well-being of Fairfield County residents.

During State Fiscal Year (SFY) 2016, the ADAMH Board developed an increased interest in prevention and early intervention services for children.  A mental health and substance abuse prevention and early intervention needs assessment and recommendations for priorities was conducted by the Ohio State University for the ADAMH Board.  The ADAMH Board purchased evidenced-based prevention and intervention services for SFY 2017 in accordance with the researchers’ recommendations.

Trauma, and its relationship to the development of mental health and addiction disorders, became an increased area of ADAMH Board focus.  Each additional childhood experience of trauma, or “Adverse Childhood Experience” or “ACE”, increases the likelihood of negative life outcomes for that child according to Vincent J. Feletti, M.D..  For example, he states that “a child with an ACE Score of 6, when compared to a male child with an ACE Score of 0, has a 46-fold (4,600%) increase in the likelihood of becoming an injection drug user sometime later in life”. It is believed that these negative life outcomes (depression, anxiety, eating disorders, substance abuse, etc.) frequently “represent valiant neurobiological attempts to cope with trauma”.

Fairfield County Behavioral Health Indicators

As part of the Harold Rogers Prescription Drug Monitoring Program Grant that the ADAMH Board was awarded three years ago, a new website has been created where data from multiple places can be shared that will shed light on the opiate/prescription drug epidemic in Fairfield County. Some of the data will be updated as new information becomes available and some of it will be “point in time” data, such as the data from the research conducted specifically under this grant.  Over 80 indicators are on the site with more being planned during the next year.  You’re invited to take a look at the site and see what it has to offer you as you learn more about the opiate crisis in our county.
