What is Sizzurp?
What drug looks like purple soda, tastes like candy, and can be lethal? Sizzurp -- a drink made by combining common household items including cough syrup. Often portrayed in mainstream music and other media sources, sizzurp has gained popularity with American youth. Over-the-counter ingredients make this concoction easy and cheap to make. Sizzurp is addictive and can contribute to a fatal overdose, especially when combined with alcohol.
This is not a harmless "party drink"
Most sizzurp is made with prescription strength medicines that might contain drugs similar to heroin and morphine which makes it very addictive. Any one of the ingredients can be dangerous on its own, but mixing prescription or over-the-counter medication and alcohol can have lethal results.
In the media...
Sizzurp has long been popular in the hip-hop community, with many rappers like T.I. and Lil' Wayne facing serious legal and health consequences from their frequent use of purple drank. Songs like 36 Mafia's "Sippin' On Some Syrup," Lil' Wayne's "Me & My Drank," and Far East Movement's "Like A G6" glamorize drinking sizzurp. Often rappers will use Styrofoam cups to represent the drink in their music videos.
Teens and young adults who listen to hip-hop and popular music are exposed to the glamorization of purple drank and are at a greater risk for trying it.
